no direct sales force and is 100% channel-
focused; its product line is designed
specifically for the SMB market; Oki owns
its own technology so isn’t dependent
on other suppliers; the reliability of LED
technology allows Oki to offer its products
with free 3-year warranties; and it is
introducing new products that will broaden
its appeal to new channel partners.
“We have not been as strong in the
copier channel as we would like to be,
because we have not offered the range of
products that we should have,” he said.
“But now we have that range, which
means a dealer doesn’t have to think in
terms of offering these products from this
vendor and these from another. The hope
and expectation is that he will offer all
products from Oki.”
Print Solutions
This applies to print solutions, too,
including Oki’s new secure print option
that will enable resellers to address a
market that IDC says is growing at a
compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of
23% (2009-2015).
It has added a foreign device interface
(FDI) to the C831/41 colour printers
(optional on the MB491 mono MFP), which
allows users to release print jobs using a
card. This option is particularly suitable for
larger businesses that might already use
cards for access control and for businesses
that mandate card release as a means of
controlling and auditing printer usage.
For smaller businesses or ones that
simply want to offer the option of secure
output on shared devices, Oki offers PIN
release through the print driver. Available
on all Oki devices that have built-in hard
disks or the ability to accommodate a
Secure Digital High Capacity (SDHC)
memory card, the Secure Print option holds
a print job in the selected printer’s memory
until the user enters their PIN.
Additional features include Encrypted
Secure Print which provides an extra
layer of security by encrypting files before
they are sent to a printer; and the secure
erasure of documents once they have been
printed or after a user-defined period of
time if they are not released.
Managed Print Services
Another major focus for Oki is Managed
Print Services (MPS), not only because it
represents a big opportunity for resellers,
but because it allows Oki to meet
customers’ needs in their entirety.
“The end user must have the right
to choose how he wants print output
delivered to him,” Laidlaw explained. “He
must be able to buy hardware or, if he
prefers, say ‘Print is very important to me
and I want the confidence that someone
else is going to come in and keep my
printers working’. We are able to come in
and give them that confidence.”
He added that Oki would work with
dealers to ensure that they were able to
meet the customer’s requirements.
“If a dealer comes across an
opportunity it doesn’t have the capability
to deliver, we can do that for them with
the dealer still fronting the deal. We will
do back office, consumables delivery,
monitoring, service delivery, break-fix, but
it will remain a service provided by the
dealer,” he said.
Oki’s capabilities in this area are well
proven as demonstrated by the MPS it is
delivering in partnership with IBM to 170
DEFRA sites throughout the UK (see next
issue of
Business Info
for more details).
Historically, Oki’s strength has been
with small and medium-sized businesses,
but the expansion of its product portfolio
and its embrace of print solutions mean
that it is now able to meet the needs
of larger customers too, bringing new
opportunities to Oki resellers.

All new models feature energy-
saving ‘Deep Sleep’ mode, which
reduces consumption to the barest
minimum (often less than 1 watt)
and ‘Auto Power Off’ technology that
automatically turns off devices after
periods on non-use.
