In the news
A survey commissioned by the
Information Commissioner’s Office
(ICO) reveals a ‘laissez faire’ attitude
to the use of personal laptops, tablets,
computers or smartphones for work
purposes that may be placing people’s
personal information at risk.
The survey carried out by YouGov reveals
that 47% of all UK adults now use their
personal smartphone, laptop or tablet
computer for work purposes. But less than
three in ten who do so are provided with
guidance on how their devices should be used
in this capacity, raising the concern that
people may not understand how to look after
personal information accessed and stored on
these devices.
The news comes as the ICO publishes
guidance explaining some of the risks
organisations must consider when allowing
personal devices to be used to process work-
related personal information. The guidance
explains how this approach, commonly known
as ‘bring your own device’ (BYOD), can be
adopted safely and in a manner that complies
with the Data Protection Act.
The YouGov survey shows that email is the
most common work activity carried out on a
personal device, cited by 55% of people who
use their personal smartphone, laptop, or tablet
computer for work purposes. This was followed
by 37% who use a personal device to edit work
documents and 36% who use one to store
work documents.

A Brother sponsored study conducted
with Incisive Media which asked IT buyers
what they are doing to support mobile
working revealed that cloud print is
firmly on the agenda.
A third of corporate IT decision makers
employing up to 1,000 people said that their
workforce is increasingly mobile and they
are considering investing in mobile printing
technology. And a quarter of the IT buyers
polled said that they are planning to introduce
cloud-based printing to their business.
Four out of five of organisations provide
remote access to central systems for employees
who work away from the office and 40% have a
BYOD policy. Other key findings include:
n
26% of respondents said that the
capability to print remotely is an important
part of the job of their mobile workers;
n
61% of organisations think that mobile
and portable printing capabilities will be
beneficial to their workforce;
n
25% of IT buyers are planning to introduce
video calls and video conferencing in the
future.

ePrinting for smartphone
users
HP has announced that Surfbox has
transformed its business with HP ePrint by
enabling smartphone users to print direct
from their devices.
Surfbox provides internet access via a network
of 800 self-service kiosks in hotels, ferryports,
airports, public libraries and shopping malls across
Ireland, the UK, France and Belgium. In the future,
all Surfbox kiosks will provide mobile print and
payment services.
HP ePrint and HP Printer On applications provide
Surfbox with a robust solution for mobile printing.
Users simply open the app, find the nearest printer,
send the document to print and go to a Surfbox
kiosk to pay and collect the documents.
“Surfbox needed to innovate to drive growth
as their business transformed from a provider of
internet access to a mobile ePrint provider,” says
Gary Tierney, PPS Country Manager HP Ireland.
“As well as providing new revenue streams, the HP
solution has helped reduce maintenance costs and
improve customer satisfaction.”
