Biomass toner
Kyocera has become the latest OEM to
introduce toner made from biomass material.
Due to be launched in the second half of this
year, the company’s Biomass toner contains
30% renewable content made from palm oil.
Because the biomass is carbon neutral, the new
toner produces 30% less CO
2
emissions than
conventional toner. The toner will be available
for use with a new Biomass series based on the
FS-C2026MFP+, FS-C2126MFP+, FS-C2526MFP,
FS-C2626MFP and FS-C5250DN. Kyocera says it
is using palm oil certified by the Roundtable on
Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), which was set up
in 2004 to promote the sustainable cultivation
of palm oil. Ricoh and Konica Minolta have also
developed toner made with biomass content.

Lean printing
Today there are all sorts of clever ways to
reduce the number of printed pages. One
of the latest is LeanPrint from Adobe.
Suitable for use with all printers, the print
optimisation software cuts toner and paper
consumption by up to 40% when printing
from popular applications and web browsers
including Microsoft Word and Excel, Adobe
Reader, Adobe Acrobat, Internet Explorer and
Firefox. LeanPrint has two modes: Toner Saver,
which cuts ink and toner consumption; and
Super Saver, which saves toner and paper by
reformatting documents to make the best use
of space without compromising readability. It
does this by converting colour charts and graphs
to black-and-white patterns; laying out text in
newspaper-style columns; and removing ads
from web pages.

Carbon neutral
printing
Ricoh Europe has adapted
its carbon neutral office printing
scheme to meet the needs of print
service providers operating Ricoh
Pro production printing systems.
The Carbon Balanced Printing
Programme, like the office-
based Sustainability Optimisation
Programme, aims to measure,
reduce and offset the environmental
impact of each print job, enabling
commercial printers and corporate
print rooms to offer a carbon neutral
service. The programme is accredited
by the British Standards Institution
(BSI).

Dascom launches new model as
dot matrix sales grow
Against a backdrop of rising sales for dot matrix
printers (see far left), DASCOM has launched a new
24-pin/94-character flatbed printer designed to output
forms used by public authorities, hospital and banks,
The Dascom 5130 features automatic edge detection
and paper alignment for both DIN A6 and DIN A4 formats. It
can handle forms up to 2.8mm thick as standard but can be
modified at the manufacturing stage to support forms up to
6mm thick. There is also a version (the 5130T) with fanfold
paper input in addition to the single sheet feeder.
The printer is able to emulate the IBM Proprinter XL24,
Epson ESC P/2 and Olivetti PR2e/40/50/2845 and, with parallel,
USB and serial interfaces, is easily integrated into existing IT
environments.
Dascom is a developer, manufacturer and provider of
enterprise printing solutions including serial dot matrix,
passbook, mobile and thermal printers marketed
under the Tally or Tally
Dascom brand names.
In the UK, its products
are sold by Dascom

Sharp fills out its range
Following quickly on the heels of its
new range of entry-level A3 mono
MFPs, Sharp has added an ‘entry-
level’ A4 colour laser MFP to its
portfolio so that it is better able to
meet the diverse printing needs of
customers.
Marc Brion, European
Product Planning Manager,
Sharp Information Systems
Europe, said: “Large tenders
usually specify a requirement
for a wide variety of
capabilities. We can now
fulfil this from a single range
that covers everything from
compact entry-level A4
devices, right through to our
production-capable MFPs.”
He added: “That’s good news for
the customer and great for our channel
partners, too.”
The DX-C200 colour printer/copier/
scanner/fax has print speeds of 20ppm;
a 35-sheet document feeder; automatic
two-sided printing; high resolution colour
network scanning; a USB port for scanning
to a memory stick; and a
maximum paper capacity of
750 sheets.
Sharp’s new series of A3 mono
MFPs – the MX-M232D, MX-M202D and
MX-M182D – offer double-sided printing,
colour scanning, Electronic Sorting (no
need for a bulky external collator) and a
Job Separator as standard, plus a wide
range of options that allow customers to
configure their ideal device.
An example of how Adobe
LeanPrint uses clever
formattting to save paper.
The use of newspaper-style
columns allows the software to
fit content from the five original
pages on the top row into the
first one and a half pages of
the second.
